Melasma usually appears as symmetrical brown, dark brown, or greyish patches on the face, most commonly on the cheeks, forehead, upper lip, nose, and chin. The patches are flat, not raised, and often become darker with sun exposure, heat, or hormonal changes. It does not cause pain or itching but can gradually worsen over time without treatment, especially in people with medium to darker skin tones.
